Its a popular pastime for car owners with some spare cash in their pockets to modified their vehicles in order to increase its visual appeal or to improve its performance on the road.
While modified cars come in for a bit of a bad rap from many people because of their association with boy racers, improving your car from its original specification can be a rewarding experience, even for those of us who aren’t as young as we used to be.
Its unfortunate that the joy of building a unique vehicle can be diluted rapidly when we go looking for a modified vehicle insurance quote after we have finished our hard work. Although its tempting not too we must tell our insurance company about all modifications we have made to our vehicles which will probably increase our premiums due to a perceived increase in risk in the insurers eyes.
Insurers are experts in managing risk, but the problem with modified card insurance is that many of the regular insurance experts have little experience when it comes to custom cars.
With this in mind, it makes sense to hunt down an insurer who specializes in custom vehicle if we want to find an insurance quote which won;t give us a cardiac arrest.
At the same time there are a few things which we can do to help reduce the size of our annual insurance bill. When adding accessories which increases the chance of theft such as alloy wheels and expensive sound system offer to keep you vehicle garages overnight and fit a high quality alarm and immobilizer.
Fitting performance exhaust systems or increasing the size of your engine will result in the largest increases to the price you have to pay for insurance so be especially careful with how far you go in this area.
If you are really looking to go as far as possible with your car modifications it would make sense to wait until you have built up 4 or 5 years no claims bonus first which will result in a large percentage drop in your premiums.
The most crucial thing you can do before you even start to plan your modifications is to inquire about the insurance costs beforehand so you know in advance if its going to cost more than you can afford to pay.
